Therapy

Students begin their therapy at RTM during the intake. The RTM treatment team helps students and their families develop meaningful goals that will help prepare each student to be successful when he returns home.

Based on these goals, we work with each student to help him identify and practice the skills that fit his individual situation and needs. Students participate in individual, group and family therapy, all of which are aimed at helping students and their families to attain their goals.

Goals and skills are evaluated each week with the student. Students are expected to assess their weekly behavior and treatment progress as well as listen to constructive feedback.

Our treatment approach is to apply our program philosophy to everything we do and form healthy therapeutic relationships that are consistent, respectful, and honest. Solution focused approaches and Stephen Glen's work on "Developing Capable Young People" are strong influences on the structure and philosophy of our program.

Glen's work suggests that students become capable when they:

  • Identify with a viable role model
  • Identify with and take responsibility for family processes
  • Have faith in personal resources to solve problems
  • Develop intrapersonal skills
  • Develop interpersonal skills
  • Develop situational skills
  • Develop judgmental skills

Graduation from the program is viewed as another transition for the student and his family. Students are involved in developing an after-care plan for this transition back into their families' homes and communities.
