Therapeutic Wilderness Program for Groups (boys)

Go back to the
Therapeutic Wilderness Program

Red Top Meadows Wilderness Program is inviting groups of students/clients accompanied by their Therapist or Counselor to participate in a Therapeutic Wilderness Expedition in the mountains surrounding Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With over 20 years of experience, we have developed an expertise in working with boys who exhibit one or more of the following symptoms or behaviors:

  • Lacking motivation
  • Poor peer relationships
  • Feeling shy, awkward and/or lonely
  • Age inappropriate behavior
  • Depression
  • Lacking healthy attachments
  • Poor social skills
  • Poor self-esteem

The overall goals for all of our expeditions are to help participants:

  • Realize they can do more physically and emotionally than they previously believed.
  • Believe it is possible for them to make meaningful connections with people.
  • Feel safer in relation to other people and the world.
  • Realize they are connected to things greater than themselves, e.g. they are part of the world.
  • Improve self-esteem by caring for themselves and others.
  • Have a safe and fun expedition.

By bringing a group of students together, who come from the same geographical area, with their Therapist or Counselor, new knowledge and insight can be transferred to the students’ homes and community. To help accomplish this, RTM will provide:

  1. Pre-trip consultation with the Therapist to:
    • Establish meaningful group and individual goals
    • Discuss risk management issues
    • Design program components and activities to meet the specific needs of the group.
    • Create pre-trip preparation plan i.e. wilderness education materials, activities, physical conditioning etc.
  2. Two Red Top Meadows Wilderness Field Staff to lead each group of 5-8 students. Staff members are trained and experienced at managing risk and providing a therapeutic and educational experience in a wilderness setting.
  3. All equipment, food, expedition clothing, and transportation from RTM to and from the trail heads.
  4. Permits for operation on federal lands.
  5. Post-trip consultation for suggestions on follow up and aftercare plans.

Program components and activities may include backpacking, community service such as trail work, rock climbing, rappelling, ropes course, prompted journals, initiative games, and other activities that focus on the students’ specific issues.

The Therapist or Counselor accompanying the group needs to have a working professional relationship with the clients and basic backcountry skills.
